Cumberland County Guide to the 2014 U.S. Open

For a region that has already hosted five Men’s and Women’s U.S. Opens since 1996, the famed Sandhills of North Carolina becomes the first ever to host back-to-back national championships in June 2014 at the Pinehurst Resort.

Because of the importance of Fort Bragg in the nation’s military, Cumberland County calls itself America's first name in defense as the Sandhills are ideal conditions for military training and great golf courses.

While Cumberland County may have to concede to Pinehurst as the state's first name in golf, it's certainly one of the state's top lieutenants with must-plays like Anderson Creek, the state's best new course in 2001, and Bayonet at Puppy Creek, a Willard Byrd design that offers plenty of cover from trees. Other quality layouts include long-time classics Cypress Lakes and Gates Four.
