Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebrations

Martin Luther King, Jr. was many things in his lifetime. A clergyman. An activist. A Nobel Peace Prize winner. A prominent leader in the fight against Civil Rights in our country. We all know who he is, as it’s no wonder that he is a national icon in the United States. Every year on the third Monday of January, we recognize this legend and the advancements that he helped make for our country.

Fayetteville is no different in celebrating this man and what he has done. A number of organizations around Cumberland County take part in honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.  If you can, please take the time to attend one of these events. They will be an uplifting experience & are appropriate for the entire family. Check out these great events:

The Cape Fear Botanical Gardens have been taken over by some pretty big bugs, but don’t worry – that 1,200 pound Praying Mantis won’t hurt you! Nor will the other nine large insects that have placed themselves around the Garden’s 77 acres.

Saturday, May 21, Armed Forces Day, the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex will pay tribute to our nation’s military history with Military through the Ages: A March through History. Taking place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this free event will feature living history presentations, educational programs, and entertainment. Guest speakers will discuss battlefield archaeology and the history of African Americans in our armed forces.

 Each May, Fayetteville and Cumberland county salutes soldiers, veterans and their families with a series of events titled “31 Day Salute.”   As the first sanctuary community for members of the military, its no surprise that our community  takes a month to show our enthusiastic appreciation, respect and support for those who served in the armed forces.
