Textile of CommUnity: Quilts from the African American Quilt Circle

The AAQC, founded in Durham in 1998 by four African-American women now boasts over 60 members and numerous achievements. Although the group has no formal mission, the primary idea at its formation was to preserve the tradition of quilting in the African-American community. Over the years, its philosophy has expanded to include other elements like giving back to the community through donations, teaching opportunities and community-building activities.

Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert

Featuring FSU University Choir, Heritage Restoration Chorale and Fayetteville Jazz Orchestra. In the last decade of his life, Duke Ellington wrote three jazz inspired sacred works for jazz band, choir, and soloists. Ellington called these concerts “the most important thing I have ever done”. Critic Gary Giddins characterized these concerts as Ellington bringing the Cotton Club revue to the church.

Bring some interesting natural treasures from home (shells, bones, feathers, wood, tiny knick knacks) and/or use those provided. Fee: to be determined. Chancellor's Distinguished Speaker Series: Charles E. Jones

Charles E. Jones is a professor in and Chair of the Department of Africana Studies at the University of Cincinnati. He is also the founding Chair of the Department of African-American Studies at Georgia State University. He earned a Ph.D. degree in Political Science at Washington State University. He is a former Congressional Black Caucus Graduate Fellow and a Fulbright Hayes Fellow. He has served two terms as President of the National Council for Black Studies (NCBS). Jones was the principal investigator of a $237,000 grant awarded by the Ford Foundation to NCBS. His teaching and research interests center on African-American Politics and African-American Studies.

On February 8, 2012, the Airborne and Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville, North Carolina will open its new temporary exhibit, "'The Animal Called POW': U.S. Special Forces Prisoners of the Vietcong."   The exhibit will feature U.S. Army Special Forces and MACV prisoners of war held in South Vietnam, as well as attempted rescue missions, current SERE training, and modern POW stories.  The exhibit will close on January 6, 2013.

Lula Washington Dance Theater

Founded in 1980 by Lula and Erwin Washington in the inner city area of South Los Angeles, California, LWDT has risen to become one of the most admired African-American contemporary dance companies in the West – known for powerful, high-energy dancing, unique choreography, and exceptional educational residencies.

The Company is composed of young, athletic dancers, many of whom were groomed in Lula Washington’s inner city dance studio. While Lula Washington encourages her dancers to be excellent performers, she also emphasizes the importance of being leaders in their communities.
