| Description |
The village of Cross Creek sat along the banks of the Cape Fear River tributary by the same name. The community developed in 1754 when John Newberry, an Pennsylvania Quaker, built a mill on the banks of the creek. The next year merchants Richard Lyon and Hugh Fullerton established a store near Newberry's mill. The mercantile business was an important link along the trading route from the Moravian Settlements to the west to the port of Wilmington. |
