Fayetteville, NC  - As a leader in the Civil Rights movement,  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. peacefully brought about changes that led to greater equality for all Americans. On the third Monday in January, the United States celebrates a holiday commemorating Dr. King. From January 6 through January 15, Cumberland County organizations also honor Dr. King.  

January 6 at 7:00 p.m. / MLK Lecture Series: Alveda King
Evangelist, author and political activist Alveda King--the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and daughter of his younger brother--will be the speaker as part of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture Series. The free event is held at St. Ann Catholic Church. For more information, call 910-483-3216. 

January 9 at 5:30 p.m. / Dr. Martin Luther King Candlelight Vigil
Join this Candlelight Vigil at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, located off Blue Street. The mission of this vigil is "to reiterate Dr. King's dream." The keynote speaker will be D.J. Haire, City Council Member District 4. For more information, call 910-261-2491.

January 11 at 11:30 a.m. / Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Observance Ceremony - The XVIII Airborne Corps hosts this annual observance at the Iron Mike Conference Center.  Brigadier General Xavier T. Brunson is guest speaker.

January 12 at 9:00 a.m. / Spring Lake Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast - Spring Lake Ministerial Alliance honors the life and legacy of Dr. King. Larry Dobbins, Mayor of Spring Lake is the guest speaker. The event is held at the Spring Lake Community Center.   For more information, call 910-309-8515

January 13 at 12:00 p.m. / Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade - Join in the celebration of Dr. King’s life at this annual downtown parade. Parade route runs from Person Street to Hay Street and ends on Winslow Avenue. For more information, call 910-261-2491.

January 14 at 5:00 p.m. / Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Worship Service - At Manna Church, the Fayetteville/Cumberland Ministerial Council hosts a worship service to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. King. The 5:00 p.m. service features keynote speaker Dr. Dumas Harshaw of First Baptist Church in Raleigh. Dr. Harshaw serves on the North Carolina MLK Commission. For more information, call 910-670-5662.

January 15 at 8:00 a.m.  / 25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast - Cumberland County Ministerial Council’s annual Commemoration of Dr. King’s life is held at the Crown Expo Center. Keynote speaker is Bishop Charles H. Ellis, III, Senior Pastor of Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, Michigan. Greater Grace Temple hosted funeral services for Civil Rights Icon Rosa Parks. After attending one of these special events, consider visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The park, located on Blue Street, holds a monument of Dr. King that bears quotes from speeches throughout his career. The park is one of the 22 sites on the community’s African –American Cultural Heritage trail. Follow this link to learn more.
