Fayetteville, NC, Harnesses the Power of Social Media to Show Support for the Troops

America’s First Military Sanctuary Community Recruits Americans for Veteran’s Day Twitter Salute

November 2011

This Veteran’s Day, Fayetteville/Cumberland County, NC, is enlisting Americans across the country to participate in Tweets4Troops, a nationwide Veteran’s Day Twitter salute. Through a local tweet-up and the hashtag #Tweets4Troops, the Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (FACVB) is encouraging people to join in an unprecedented show of support to honor veterans and servicemen and servicewomen. The campaign will kick off with a Tweet Up at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2011 at Cross Creek Mall. Residents, family, friends and all supporters are encouraged to join the FACVB to tweet their support using the hashtag #Tweets4Troops.

A “tweet up” is an organized gathering of people that use Twitter. To participate, Twitter users need to follow the FACVB on Twitter, www.Twitter.com/FACVB, and use the hashtag #Tweets4Troops in each tweet. People across the country are encouraged to get involved in the Twitter conversation, tweeting to friends and loved ones in the United States Army (@USArmy), United States Navy (@USNavy), and United States Marine Corp (@USMC).

“We are excited to harness the power of social media to reach military supporters across the country,” said John Meroski, President and CEO of the FACVB. “Twitter now gives us the reach and capacity to make this a nationwide salute, to recognize and support our troops in a way that’s never before been done.”

The FACVB will donate one dollar for every tweet with the hashtag #Tweet4Troops on Veteran’s Day (up to $1,000) to the Army’s Army. The Army’s Army, established in 2008, is the world's only non-profit volunteer organization of citizens and businesses who have pledged their moral, physical and spiritual support to those in the military. The Army’s Army is closely involved with several of the community’s largest military events, including 31 Day Salute, Heroes Homecoming and Ft. Bragg MWR’s Operation Celebrate Freedom. Army’s Army member and 2011 Military Spouse of the Year Crystal Cavalier will have the honor of kicking off Tweet4Troops with the first Tweet. You can follow the Army’s Army on Twitter at @armysarmy. Crystal’s Twitter handle is @criscavalier.

“We invite everyone to come out, participate in the conversation, and show their support and appreciation to the veterans and active servicemen and servicewomen who have given so much for our country,” added Meroski.
