Ghosts, Goggles and Goblins

Think about it. If everyone in the world was a morning person and slept all night, how would we really know if ghosts, goblins and spooks existed? This tour is for those who like to stay up late, have an adventurous side and who enjoy sleeping in - late.

Day One

Start this tour by checking into your hotel in time for supper. Put your DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door. Later, you’ll be glad you did.

After dinner, you may want to drink some coffee, or some courage, with your dessert, because the ghosts are waiting for you.

As you board the coach, you’ll be handed your NVG’s (night vision goggles). Wear them while you’re riding. Pretend your on a Special Forces recon mission!

Your coach will drop you off at the Heritage Square. Will a goblin greet you? Folklore has it that two have been wandering through the building since the Civil War. One may be in a black dress. Find out why.

Then run back to your coach. Spooks may be following you! You’ll drive by the Oval Ballroom and learn about the 1850 trial for the “murder of the century.” The whodunit involves a little rat poison, a husband and a cup of coffee.

With jacket and flashlight in tow, walk to the Cross Creek Cemetery. Hometown heroes have been buried there since 1785. Many have been waiting on you. Others have only been there since The Great Fire in 1831 or the Civil War. Gather together and hear their tales.

You might hear some noises from the Kyle House or get a strange vibe from old James Kyle, himself. He’s a hometown hero who’s been waiting for you, too!

Is anyone hanging out at the Ghost Tower? Got goose bumps yet?

Collect your thoughts and calm down. At Vander, you’ll get out and walk the track, train track, that is. Look! Do you see a light? The Vander Light. It comes close – then goes far. You may even see a spirit walking with it. Can you catch it?

By now, the sun should be starting to rise and it’s time for bed.

Day Two

Start off your day with a brunch and then head over to the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex to find out what happened to you last night! Were those ghosts real? Could there have been more? How many battlegrounds and cemeteries are around? You’ll find that out, and much more, during your visit.

Then, catch a nap on your way back home! Boo!
