Campbelton was the first settlement in the area, incorporated in 1762 and located on the west bank of the river. It wasn't until 1819 that the first bridge crossing the river was constructed to bring people over to the east bank. Campbellton Landing is the site of some of the best-kept Confederate breastworks.
