Gillis Hill Farm

  • Overview

The Gillis Family has farmed in Cumberland County for nine generations and for over 250 years since immigrating from Scotland in the mid to late 1700s. Over the years, they have farmed timber for building materials and naval stores, corn, soybeans, tobacco, cotton, wheat, hay, and vegetables. Tour their historic farm and learn about their history, farm life, and how changes in technology have affected them over the generations. The historic farm has animals, antique farm equipment, and restored buildings that include a smokehouse, tobacco curing barn, sawmill, log corn crib, and water-powered grist mill. A self-guided walking tour of the farm is $3.00 per person. While touring the farm, have a scoop of their homemade ice cream from their on-farm ice cream shop. The ice cream shop and tours are open seasonally from April through October. Today, Gillis Hill Farm is still farming commercially, growing corn, soybeans, wheat, hay, and raising cattle.
