U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum (ASOM)

  • Overview

The Airborne & Special Operations Museum (ASOM) has several meeting spaces that are open for groups to reserve in two-hour blocks:

    Yarborough-Bank Vistascope Theater
Named for Lieutenant General Bill Yarborough, a member of the U.S. Army’s first tactical airborne unit and designer of the airborne “jump wings” insignia, and for Colonel Aaron Bank, a WWII Office of Strategic Services (OSS) veteran and a founding father of the modern Special Forces, the Yarborough-Bank Vistascope Theater can seat up to 244 people. A 30-foot-by-40-foot screen covers the main wall.

The ASOM's dramatic, 59,000-square-foot building is highlighted by the 5,000-square-foot, five-story-high, open lobby area (designed by Michael West of the architectural firm of Calloway, Johnson, Moore & West in Winston-Salem, NC), which can seat up to 150 people, banquet style. The lobby is accented by natural light from the glass walls and surrounding, high-mounted windows. The lobby itself contains a special exhibit, featuring two fully deployed parachutes: a WWII-era T-5 round chute and a modern MC-4 square chute. The lobby area accommodates up to 300 guests, reception style, or 150 guests, seated at round tables. The lobby has restricted use during the normal hours of operation of the museum.

    Video Theater
This smaller theater features 42 fixed, upholstered, theater-style seats, facing an area with ample space for presentations.

General James J. Lindsay Conference Room
Named for the founder of the ASOM Foundation, General (Retired) James J. Lindsay, this room is ideal for small conferences or meetings and can seat up to 25 people. The room can be configured in a variety of ways to suit your needs. It is equipped with a projection screen and dry-erase board, perfect for presentations.

    Reflection Gardens
Located on the Hay Street side of the museum, the gardens are a fresh-air way to experience the museum. The walkways are lined with granite pavers, engraved with the names of soldiers, family members, and other supporters of the museum. Outdoor events, such as receptions or dinners, can be held in the gardens.
